Update: Well...could be worse!

I opened up the MacBook and interestingly, as soon as I took off the bottom plate; it started charging. Hmmm.

I put some pressure on the charge port area, stopped charging. Hmmm..

Took pressure off, started charging. Hmmm...

I’ve narrowed the issue down to two things:

1. DC-In needs replacing.

2. Logic board needs repair.

I think maybe the computer was damaged the whole time and I just wasn’t paying attention. Now that I think about it, the computer should have achieved more than a paltry 4% battery after an hour of charging. Mmmmm, eBay buyer guarantee time!

Kinja'd!!!

I finally got around to looking over that MacBook Pro I recently got to replace that middle MacBook (black 2008). Well, it lasted for all of an hour...

Kinja'd!!!

The extension cord that I had the MagSafe plugged into violently tumbled to the floor, unplugging the MagSafe from the extension cord and making a neat electrical pop. Unfortunately for me, the computer only had 4% battery and it died while I bent over to plug the MagSafe back in.

I suppose this must have caused a power surge as once I plugged the MagSafe back in the charging light did not illuminate and the MacBook would not power on. Crap.

I tested the MagSafe on the other two MacBooks, so it’s fine. I even brought over my other MagSafe. It’s fine too. Double crap. So...uh, there are one of three things that happened:

1. SMC needs to be reset. Since the battery is dead and I can’t boot, I’ll have to get creative.

2. DC-In board is fried. Lengthy procedure, but no worse than an iPhone.

3. Logic board is dead. Ugggggggh, I’d hate to have bought this computer and waited a month for it to arrive (came from a 0 feedback seller) for it to work for literally all of an hour.

In other news, my mum is desperate to start her business and is trying to get a business loan. She wants to use two of the smarts as collateral. Yeah, no. Not. Going. To. Happen. Of course my mum would be back to trying to control me. I gotta GTFO as soon as my taxes come in.

But why doesn’t she use her own stuff as collateral?

Also, I have an old black Macbook back in T.O. It was the greatest laptop I’ve ever owned.

Unplug it, take battery out and hold the power button for a few seconds. Just enough to drain the capacitors.

Put the battery back and power.

Sometimes this gets them going again.

Years ago I bought a beat-to-hell early 2008 MBP over at the Goodwill Outlet for about $5. I borrowed a power adapter from a co-worker to see if it worked, and not surprisingly it didn’t power on. I had other things to do so I ignored it, but was surprised to hear the startup chime about an hour later. I guess it just needed to get some juice back in the circuits.

The battery’s a little weak, but it works. I replaced the top panel around the keyboard and the display, and I’ve been using as my primary Mac and Windows notebook for three years now. Perhaps leaving it plugged in for a few hours may bring it back to life...

Can your mom even use your Smarts as collateral without you being part of the loan?

Agreed. My girlfriends MBP sometimes dies while charging, and disconnecting the battery lets it power up again. Unfortunately, that means every time it dies, someone gets to unscrew the bottom cover.

Well at least your MagSafe didn’t catch fire. That was a fun one.

Sounds like ripping the battery out and holding the power button for a few seconds to drain the capacitors on the motherboard should reset the SMC for you. Not the right procedure for this model but the basic gist for all models is that you have to get all the energy out of the motherboard so it should work.

My Macintosh experience has been limited to an iBook G4 that eventually kernel panicked on me, and a 2008-ish Macbook that was my daily driver through middle school after the iBooks were ousted. I have no Mac advice, unfortunately, other than “remove the battery, empty out the power by trying to boot it a few times, then plug it back in and try again.”

Keep the Smarts safe.

I used to have a ton of these parts lying around, not anymore.

If you run into major issues, feel free to shoot me an email, I used to run a computer repair shop, and I work in higher level managed services now. Dont mind lending a hand if youre stumped.

As far as the issue at hand, I havent see a blown DC board in a MacBook since the PowerBook days. Back then it was a separate board from the main logic board, relatively easy to replace. From day one of the MacBook and MacBook Pro, its integrated into the logic board. It was both due to the smaller, redesigned plug, but also for shaving weight and making them thinner (they were not actually thinner by much). Ive had these apart many times, so I remember it really well. I would pull the battery, sit overnight, and revisit in the morning, first with no battery to see if it comes to life.

Ive never experienced quite that order of events, so I couldnt tell you definitely yes or now if something is affected, but I would hazard a guess that it may be okay. Only one way to find out though. Ive had my unibody MacBook Pro apart a few times, so I can be pretty certain. The newer ones are a little more forgiving, so hope for the best, right?

DC-In boards are still separate in this generation, thankfully.

Read my update, the issue only gets weirder the further I go down the rabbit hole.

I’ll let it sit overnight, though I have a feeling that I’m going to have to replace that stupid board. And if the board isn’t the issue, game over. I only paid like $150 for it so it’s not worth troubleshooting too much.

Because she doesn’t have anything that can be used as collateral. The two things she actually owns have liens on them so she could pay for her exploits.

And her business is?

And I am pleased to report that my late 2012 Mac Mini is still working - the last one crapped out after 4 years. Apparently a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 is a decent processor. Or so I’d like to think.

It is perhaps a little amusing that the first MacBook that I get from eBay from a 0 feedback seller is borked. At least because he was a 0 feedback seller the thing sold for way under trending price. If push comes to shove I can probably make back all of my money .

My mum opened up a call center. This is business idea...uh...I’ve lost track. She’s had a “house finding” business, another call center, another sort of pseudo-realtor business, she’s tried being a landlord (that one sounded fun to me so I partnered with her on that), she’s tried flipping houses, and finally she worked for a slum lord finding people he can overcharge on rent. I’m sure I’m missing more business attempts.

Her current business plan has the most potential for success since I had a hand in its creation and it doesn’t involve renting a house out to a drug dealer posing as a friendly girl. However, I’m not chancing even one of my cars to her businesses. I like not having liens on my hard earned stuff.

The only successful businesses run by anyone in my immediate family were my dad’s old trucking company (mum made him shut it down) and my eBay store (even though it exists purely for fun).

My dad’s parents had, variously, a candy store, a clothing store, a grocery store, and, I believe, a restaurant. All the businesses failed, but it was DC during the Depression.
